Winter Survival

Staying warm and safe through a prairie winter

Saskatchewan winters are long, dry, and genuinely cold — −30 °C and colder happens every year. None of this is scary once you're set up. Here's what newcomers most often wish they'd known.

Winter in Saskatoon & Snow Removal Tips

Winters in Saskatoon are very long. Snow usually starts in early to mid-October and can sometimes continue until May before it fully stops. If you live in an apartment or townhouse, you don’t need to worry about shoveling snow. However, if you live in a detached house, you will be responsible for shoveling snow from the front yard, backyard, and sidewalk during winter. In summer, you will also need to mow the lawn.

Vehicle driving tips

1. Block heater 2. Winter tire 3. Scraper 4. Washer fluid anti-frozen(-40) 5. SLOOOOOOOW! 6. Winter tire is better than all season.

Clothing Tips

Do not bring winter jackets or snow boots from your home country. They are rarely warm enough for Saskatchewan winters, which can drop below -30°C. It is better to buy specialized winter gear in Canada at stores like Winners, Marshalls, or Walmart.

Home Maintenance Tips

1. Before freezing temperatures hit, you must turn off the outdoor water valve from inside your house, and drain the remaining water in the outside pipes and faucets. Failure to do so will cause pipes to burst. 2. keep open the heater above 16 degrees during the winter for avoiding the freezing pipe
